What are the average temperatures in the Ozarks throughout the year?
In the winter, temperatures can range from cold to mild, while summers tend to be warm and humid. Spring and fall offer pleasant weather, with mild temperatures ideal for fishing.
Is there a trout season for Lake Taneycomo?
No, there is no specific trout season on Lake Taneycomo. Trout fishing is open year-round, offering anglers the opportunity to fish regardless of the season.
What equipment do I need?
We provide all the necessary equipment for our fishing tours, including fly rods, reels, flies, and other gear. However, if you prefer to bring your own equipment, you are welcome to do so. Please note that for wade-in trips we do not provide waders and boots.
Do you offer guide trips in the winter?
Yes, we fish year-round, including during the winter months. We will only cancel a trip if there is extreme weather with lightning. If a client wishes to cancel a trip due to inclement weather we will work with them to rebook.
What species of trout are available to catch?
Lake Taneycomo is home to rainbow and brown trout, providing anglers with the opportunity to catch both species throughout the year.
What are considered "trophy" catches?
Trophy catches refer to exceptionally large specimens of trout that exceed the average size for their species in Lake Taneycomo typically 20″ or more. These prized fish offer anglers a challenging and rewarding fishing experience.
What time of year is best for catching trophy trout?
While trophy trout can be caught year-round, the colder months of winter and early spring often offer the best opportunities for landing trophy-sized fish. We recommend December through April for trophy rainbow trout and September through December for trophy browns.
How big do brown trout get?
Brown trout in Lake Taneycomo can grow to impressive sizes, with trophy specimens often exceeding 20 inches in length and weighing several pounds. The two largest browns on record in Lake Taneycome were caught in 2019 and were both over 34 lbs!
Why do we have a catch and release policy?
Our catch and release policy is in place to promote conservation and sustainability of the trout population in Lake Taneycomo, in accordance with local regulations.
What do I need to bring with me?
Anglers should bring appropriate clothing for the weather, a valid fishing license and trout permit, sunscreen, sunglasses, and any personal fishing gear they prefer to use. Clients are also welcome to bring any food items they like.
Is lunch provided for a full-day guide trip?
No, lunch is not provided. However, guests are welcome to bring their own food. We provide light snacks and bottled water for refreshment. We do have a cooler on the boat that clients are welcome to use.
Do I need my own waders for a wade-in trip?
Yes, anglers should bring their own waders and boots for wade-in trips. Alternatively, we can assist in arranging wader and boot rentals from a local provider.
What is the advantage of a power drift boat?
A power drift boat allows for efficient transportation along the river, maximizing fishing time and access to prime fishing spots. Additionally, a power drift boat allows us to visit prime holding locations multiple times while fish are active.
What if I have zero experience?
Captain Darren loves teaching beginners, so no prior experience is necessary to enjoy a guided fly fishing trip with us.
Is fly fishing a good activity for kids?
Fly fishing is a fantastic activity for kids. It offers a unique and rewarding outdoor experience that promotes patience, coordination, and appreciation for nature. We have taken out clients as young as 6 and well into their 90s!
